Fans of Akella's Sea Dogs pirate game have been waiting for a proper sequel ever since the original Sea Dogs 2 project was somehow mut(il)ated into Pirates of the Caribbean, and released in 2003 alongside Disney's pirate movie featuring Johnny Depp as captain Jack Sparrow. But that wasn't the real sequel, was it? I for one didn't see it that way. But either way, none of Akella's upcoming naval games are called Sea Dogs 2, although we're hoping that one of them in particular will turn out to be the spiritual successor we've all been waiting for! And that game is Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales (not to be confused with Age of Pirates: Captain Blood, which looks a bit crappier).
Up until recently, Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales was supposed to be published by Playlogic, but now we learn that Atari has also jumped onboard, by signing a worldwide distribution agreement with Playlogic. Under the terms of the contract, Atari will distribute the action-adventure role-playing pirate-simulating rum-smuggling game throughout Europe, the US and Asia.
"In Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales, players take the role of reckless fortune-hunter Blaze or alternatively his red-headed daredevil stepsister Beatrice, and sail the rough seas in a tall ship with a loyal crew of vicious cutthroats and fierce corsairs. As players navigate through the Caribbean Sea, they will encounter massive naval battles and sword fights, take on challenging quests, conquer and manage colonies, trade goods and plunder merchant convoys to make fortunes.
Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales features a wealth of gaming treasures such as 16 different sail ships, varying weather conditions, day and night cycles, multiplayer battles with up to 16 opponents and multiplayer modes including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Defend the Convoy and Capture the Fort."
Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales will hopefully drop anchor in September 2006. In the meantime, feel free to check out the game's recently opened official website. Looks sweet.(N.B. Archive text, links removed)
